The Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology is home to a community of dedicated scientists, students and postdoctoral fellows conducting innovative research on biochemical and molecular mechanisms governing cellular processes. Biochemistry and molecular biology are the underpinnings of modern biomedical and translational research, and our department provides this background for all trainees at VCU.

We’re proud to provide a collaborative, collegial atmosphere where faculty, students, postdoctoral fellows and administrators work together to promote and share in the discovery of fundamental principles governing life processes.

Our Mission

The Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology address important issues through innovative research and provide high quality educational opportunities for pre- and post-doctoral trainees.

ResearchOur outstanding faculty, state-of-the-art instrumentation and robust resources within the department, the School of Medicine, Massey Cancer Center and VCU at large all enable our fundamental discoveries. At the core of this mission is a unique spirit reinforced through student and postdoctoral training and faculty engagement in scientific interactions.

EducationOur teaching methods help to reinforce difficult concepts and provide individualized attention that fosters comprehensive training. A program of instruction in teaching for our junior faculty, postdoctoral fellows and students ensures that future teachers have the necessary tools to communicate clearly and effectively.
